Basic Sign Language Diversity and Cultural Awareness Direct Care Standards in Excellence    
A 2–hour course encompasses much more than just recognizing signs with the eyes.
 
A 3-hour course that introduces the importance of recognizing, understanding and respecting all cultures.
 
A 2-hour course that will help build care giving skills with wisdom and empathy.

Blood Bourne Pathogens   Return to Top ^   View calendar
There will be a 15- minute video presentation and a brief examination will be given at the end of the course. No pre-study material is required. You are required to attend this course prior to your first day of duty and must be renewed every year.

Communicable Diseases
This course may be taken only when you renew your certificate for Blood Bourne Pathogens.
This is a 45-minute video presentation on preventing communicable diseases. A pre and post tests will be given.

Medication Technician Training Program (MTTP)  Return to Top^   View calendar
This is a 24-hour course taught in four parts. There is a Medication Manual for this course. The manual may be either borrowed from one of the Senior Counselors, or the JFGH Admin Office (see Training Coordinator) for a $40 cash refundable deposit. The deposit will be refunded upon the return of the manual. If the manual is not returned at the completion of the course, the deposit will be forfeited.

Employee is required to take Math and Reading Comprehension tests before taking the initial Medication Class. The passing score is at least 70%.

MTTP Re-Certification Return to Top^   View calendar
This course is required every 2 years, 90 days before your birthday. You will receive a letter from the Administrative office to remind you of your re-certification. You should receive an application from the Maryland Board of Nursing at your home address 1 month before your date of birth. If you don’t receive it, contact Rosemary DiGioia at 301-984-3839 ext 104. If re-certification has been expired for more than a month, the entire course must be successfully repeated without compensation.

This course is 5 hours and uses the JFGH Policy and Procedure Manual as a foundation for discussion. Participants should bring their JFGH manual to the course. A test concludes the course.

CPR - Heart Saver with AED (Automatic External Defribilator)   Return to Top^  View calendar
This 4-hour course comprised of lecture and practicum. Participants will learn the practice of CPR and have an opportunity to demonstrate their skill on "dummies". No pre-study materials are required. Certification must be renewed every two years.

First Aid   Return to Top^   View calendar
This is a 4-hour course that covers the basics of adult First Aid procedures. The course is mostly lecture, with a short practicum and a multiple-choice test at the end. No pre-study materials are required. Certification must be renewed every three years.

Introduction to Developmental Disabilities   Return to Top^   View calendar
This is an 18-hour overview of subjects required by the Developmental Disabilities Administration. The course is taught in two separate sessions. There are no pre-study materials; however a study packet is given during the course to each participant.

Introduction to developmental Disabilities I - This session includes the General Characteristics and Needs (2 credits) and The Aging Process and Special Needs of Older Adults (4 credits).

Part 1: Introduction to Developmental Disabilities ll - includes
The Fundamental Rights (2 credits), Community Integration and Inclusion (2 credits) and Communication Skills (2 credits).

Part 2: Introduction of Developmental Disabilities lll – includes Principles of Behavior Change (2 credits) and Supporting Individuals to Make Choices (2 credits).

This is a 2-hour course that gives new employees the basic understanding of Jewish holidays, customs and traditions.

This is a 2-hour course that gives new employees the basic understanding of how to keep kosher in the group homes. Pre-requisite of viewing the JFGH video “Keeping a Kosher Home” is a must. Participants are required to bring their JFGH policy manual to class.

Defensive Driving  Return to Top^  View calendar
This is a 6- hour course given to all employees. The goal of the national Safety Council's Defensive Driving course is to provide drivers with knowledge and safe driving techniques to prevent collision and violations. The course focuses on collision prevention through hazard recognition and application of collision avoidance techniques. In addition, the course addresses common driving violations that result in collision and how to change driver habits to eliminate moving violations.

The American Sign Language (ASL) course is designed to facilitate students in acquiring basic words and phrases. This 2-hour course encompasses much more than just recognizing signs with the eyes. Students will be taught to think critically about ASL, not merely to repeat someone else’s signs.

Diversity and Cultural Awareness  Return to Top^  View calendar
This is a 3-hour course. Diversity encompasses both differences as well as similarities between individuals and groups. This course will introduce the importance of recognizing, understanding and respecting all cultures, how Cultural Awareness impacts personal and professional development and practices; and how to value, interact and deal with individuals of diverse cultures. The overall goal of this course is to help create a work environment that is more inclusive of diverse cultural backgrounds.

This is a 2-hour course that will demonstrate how to create a culture of continuous improvement, learning and innovating that will ensure continuous quality of care at JFGH.

Participants will learn how to build care giving skills with wisdom an empathy, how to identify the qualities you bring to the job and ensuring excellence in your work.
